How to dispute a medical billing error

Billing mistakes happen. Fixing one usually takes a clear written request and a little follow-up.

Steps

  1. Get the itemized bill and your insurer's Explanation of Benefits (EOB).
  2. Mark each charge you're questioning.
  3. Call billing, write down the date and the representative's name, then send a written dispute.
  4. Ask them to hold the account from collections while they review it.
  5. If insurance should have paid, call your insurer too. The problem may be a coding or claim error they can resubmit.

Keep records

Save copies of everything you send, plus proof of mailing (certified mail is worth it).
